Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited Myanmar last week and they started with a visit to some of the women who work in the textile industry. Jolie wanted to learn more about their working conditions.

Jolie and Suu Kyi spoke to the workers about their living and working conditions and about their future aspirations.

The garment industry has been in the spotlight for a number of years now. Since 2011 the Myanmar workers have been protesting for better pay and conditions after decades of unfair and unhealthy working conditions.

Jolie has been working on the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative that promotes prosecutions of sexual violence perpetrators. Last Friday whilst Jolie was in Myanmar, she urged the workers to ensure those who committed sexual violence are bought to justice.

It is great to see such a big Hollywood name being conscious and aware of the garment industry and how these women are getting treating. Let’s hope Jolie is not the first to become involved with the textile industry.

If you are unfamiliar with the garment Industry and the working conditions head over to Netflix and watch The True Cost, an insightful documentary on the garment industry.
